Prof. Bayya YEGNANARAYANA

Work Status: Retired

Last Designation: ,

Areas of Interest:

Signal Processing, Image Processing, Artificial Neural Networks, Acoustics

Specialisation:

Speech Processing, Neural Networks

Major Professional Contributions:

Born on 9th January 1944 in Rajahmundry, Prof. Bayya Yegnanarayana obtained his BSc, BE, ME and PhD degrees in 1961, 1964, 1966, and 1974, respectively. He served at various high-profiled institutions, which include IISc, CMU Pittsburgh USA, IIT Madras, IIIT Hyderabad, BITS pilani Hyderabad campus, and CMUAfrica in Kigali Rwanda. He is currently a distinguished professor and visiting faculty at several IITs, IIITs and universities in India. He served as a visiting faculty at universities in USA, UK, France, Germany and The Netherlands.

Prof.Yegnanarayana contributed in a significant way in Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing. He was responsible for the design and development of the acoustic test facilities at IISc during the period 1966-71, where he designed and built the first anechoic sound chamber in India using indigenously developed materials. He initiated research in Speech Signal Processing at IISc in early '70s. He established the Speech and Vision Laboratory in the department of CSE at IIT Madras, which became the largest and most productive research group in the country. His untiring efforts have made the speech group at IIT Madras world-renowned.

Prof.Yegnanarayana has focused his research mainly on extracting features for speech processing applications, such as speech enhancement, multi-speaker separation, speech recognition and speaker recognition. He made fundamental contributions by developing methods for processing the phase using group-delay functions. At IIIT Hyderabad, Prof. Yegnanarayana has developed several new signal processing methods for speech applications, which include zero frequency filtering (ZFF), zero time windowing (ZTW) and single frequency filetring (SFF) methods. These new approaches resulted in over 20 journal papers and 100 conference papers from several MS and PhD research scholars.

Prof.Yegnanarayana is a pioneer in India in teaching and research in Signal Processing and Neural Networks. He introduced graduate level courses in Digital Signal Processing and Speech Technology in early '70s, and in Artificial Neural Networks in mid '80s. His book on "Artificial Neural Networks", published by Prentice-Hall of India in 1999, has become a popular graduate text in colleges and universities in India.

Prof.Yegnanarayana has been the principal investigator for several research projects sponsored by agencies in India, Europe and US. He supervised 34 PhDs and 42 MS theses. He has published over 400 papers in international and national journals, and in conference proceedings. He has also contributed to many book chapters for edited volumes. He has given over 200 invited talks at several educational institutions in India.

Prof. Yegnanarayana is a Fellow of INAE, INSA, IASc, APAS and also a Fellow of the IEEE (USA). He is the only Indian citizen so far to become a Fellow of the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA).

Prof. Yegnanarayana was on the Editorial Boards of several journals including IEEE. He will be joining shortly the Editorial Board of the Journal of Acoustical Society of America. He served as the General Chair for Interspeech 2018 in Hyderabad, which attracted around 1100 overseas and 400 national participants
