Professor Jai Krishna and Professor SN Mitra Memorial Awards

Purpose of the Award

To institute awards in memory of late Prof. Jai Krishna, Foundation President and Prof SN Mitra, first Honorary Secretary, a Past Vice- President and a Foundation Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Prof Jai Krishna Award shall be given each year in the disciplines of Engineering Section I (Civil Engineering), Engineering Section III (Mechanical Engineering), Engineering Section IV (Chemical Engineering), Engineering Section VII (Aerospace Engineering) and Engineering Section VIII (Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering)

Prof S N Mitra Memorial Award shall be given each year, in the disciplines of Engineering Section II (Computer Engineering and Information Technology), Engineering Section V (Electrical Engineering), Engineering Section VI (Electronics & Communication Engineering), Engineering Section IX (Energy Engineering) and Engineering Section X (Interdisciplinary and Special Engineering Fields and Leadership in Academia, R&D and Industry)

Eligibility

INAE Fellows who are eminent engineers, engineer scientists or technologists of high achievements and standing will be eligible for the subject awards. They are expected to have made contributions of a high order to Indian Engineering and Technology and acquired a high level of eminence and respect in the engineering community. The nominee should be an INAE Fellow and should not be a member of the INAE Governing Council during the year of the award.

Criteria

The nominee should be an eminent engineer, innovator, expert in engineering sciences or a technologist of distinguished standing, and should have made significant contributions in one or more of the following:

Academic and scholarly achievements in any discipline of Engineering and Technology,
Outstanding research in engineering and technology and application thereof,
Outstanding contributions in the management of education and research in Engineering,
Outstanding achievements and contributions in the Indian industry, engineering services or engineering projects.

Nominations

Nominations of engineers, engineer-scientists and technologists will be invited from the INAE Fellowship in the fields of Engineering, Technology, and Technical Education Management. The nominations to be submitted preferably through Digital Platform only. Wherever it is not  possible to submit the nominations through Digital Platform despite persistent efforts, in exceptional case, the same can be submitted on the prescribed Proforma indicating  a statement of the distinguished achievements and contributions of the nominee. The last date of receipt of nominations will be 15th day of May each year.

Validity

The nominations shall remain valid for three years and renominations shall be accepted.

Selection for the Award

The Selection Committee under the Chairmanship of President with three Vice-Presidents as members will recommend one nominee each for conferment of Prof. Jai Krishna Memorial Award and Prof. SN Mitra Memorial Award for approval of the Council.

Value of the Award

The Award shall carry Rs.2 lakhs in cash and a Citation.

Presentation of the Award

The awardees will be requested to deliver an inspirational talk on their exciting engineering experiences during the Academy Annual Convention.

RECIPIENTS OF PROFESSOR JAI KRISHNA MEMORIAL AWARD 2020

Dr. V Ramaswamy

Dr V Ramaswamy, Professor, Department of Metallurgical Engineering, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore has made outstanding contributions in the field of Ferrous Metallurgy. He developed many new steel products such as dual phase steels, Duplex stainless steels, Heat resistant steel for Indian Railways etc. He had also helped the strategic sectors by developing 9Cr-1 Mo steels for Atomic Energy and Si-Cr-Ni steels for defence applications. As ED and CE of Salem Steel Plant, he commissioned the coin blanking line. He was responsible for completing a Rs. 600 Crore hot rolling Steckel mill in 1995 without any cost and time overrun. Dr. Ramaswamy was invited to be an expert member in the DMRL project on the development of a high strength and with high weldability characteristics for the Indian Navy.

RECIPIENTS OF PROFESSOR SN MITRA MEMORIAL AWARD 2020

Prof LM Patnaik

Prof LM Patnaik, INSA Honorary Scientist and Adjunct Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore and formerly Formerly Vice-Chancellor, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune has made significant research contributions in the area of Computer Science. He proposed a novel concept of adaptive genetic algorithms to solve complex optimization problems encountered in science, engineering and management applications. His novel parallel architecture called Extended Hypercube yields performance better than most commercial computers for problems involving extensive communication such as simulation of human brain. He has made significant contributions to the design of onboard computers for Indian satellites and developed high performance online nuclear fuel rod positioning algorithms for Indian nuclear reactors.
