Prof. Sharma has made several significant contributions in the area of modelling and analysis of optical waveguides and imaging devices and components. He has developed new method for total field propagation through guiding structures, which is numerically more efficient than existing beam propagation method. He has applied the method to several problems such as propagation through non uniform waveguides (e.g., tapers and Y-junctions, bends), reflections from periodic waveguides, modes in real and complex index waveguides, and nonlinear wave propagation in optical fibers. He gave new methods and algorithms for each steps involved in analysis of gradient-index (GRIN) optical imaging systems..
