Prof. Chandra Shekhar Prasad Ojha
Present Designation:
Institute Chair Professor, IIT-RoorkeeAreas of Interest:
Modeling of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering Systems, Water Resources Management, Hydrological Processes, Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources
Specialisation:
Environmental Hydraulics, Water Resources Engineering
Major Professional Contributions:
(1) Developed algebraic relationships for drag coefficient and fall velocity of non-spherical particles. These relationships have applications in the design of settling basins in hydropower schemes, design of sediment/slurry transporting pipes in the mining industry, sediment carrying canals in irrigation, etc. Relationships to compute bed and suspended load, scour, and settling efficiency are proposed.
(2) Developed explicit relationships for well functions used for aquifer parameter estimation in confined, leaky aquifers, and analysis of borewell, dug well and artesian well-pumping tests. A generalized model for the seepage face and the phreatic surface is developed. Use of these algebraic well functions can be made in well field analysis to control the excessive lowering of groundwater table, which may help in the planning and utilization of groundwater resources.
(3) Developed non-linear root water uptake model and related non-linearity parameter for 28 crops, validated it through experimental data in India and USA through MoES(India)-NERC(U.K.) project. This model has the potential of the application under changing climate and can plan irrigation schedules leading to a considerable saving of water.
(4) Strategies for simulation of pollutants including virus transport are developed for unique estimation of parameters. These models have the potential of application in river-bank filtration. An Indo-German cooperation center is established at Haridwar-Uttarakhand through an EU project to address water-related issues. Models are developed for flood estimation in Indian catchments.
(5) Design of on-farm reservoir in irrigation, design of soil-aquifer treatment system, in series biofilm and baffled reactors, a model for flow distribution in reactors, and generalized BOD-DO model for solute transport and non-point pollutant loading in rivers is developed along with a model for the critical head for the protection of levees. The model is developed for optimum reservoir operation in the Bhakra dam. Pong reservoir operation rules are developed as a part of the Newton-Bhabha international research project.
(6) Developed method for Climate Change detection and a methodology for bias correction, also developed a rainfall-runoff model
