Prof. Sivakumar Babu Gandluri L
Present Designation:
,Areas of Interest:
Specialisation:
Major Professional Contributions:
Consultancy Areas:
Geotechnical engineering, landslides, ground improvement, landfill engineering, circular economy, life cycle analysis, dumpsite remediation, remediation of contaminated grounds, reliability and risk assessment
Sector Associated With:
1. Significantly contributed to the research and teaching of risk and reliability analysis in geotechnical and geoenvironmental practices in India. Out of the 24 doctoral thesis guided, 11 are in the area of reliability analysis and 5 students are faculty members in IITs and more than 100 journal papers have been published.
2. Contributed significantly to the area of geoenvironmental engineering. For example, a constitutive model for Municipal Solid Waste which received considerable attention. The application of the model was presented in an invited lecture at ICSMGE Conference in Seoul in 2017. In addition, work on municipal solid waste characteristics was done and methods to rehabilitate dumpsites using bioremediation using aerobic and anaerobic processes are illustrated. One case study of legacy waste of 25 acres using bioremediation using leachate recirculation and methane gas extraction wells is taken up which is perhaps first of its kind in India.
3. The work on soil nailing and guidelines received considerable attention and its application in highway sector is introduced as Section 3200 in Indian Roads Manual of Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. The contributions on filter design are being considered for incorporation in codes of Indian Roads Congress. Many projects in the area of ground improvement, rehabilitation of distressed structures were handled based in fundamental understanding of soil reinforcement techniques and geosynthetics. A popular book on introduction to Soil reinforcement and Geosynthetics was written about 20 years ago, which is a standard reference book
4. Advocated the systematic analysis and Investigation of failures of geotechnical origin and introduced the subject of Forensic Geotechnical Engineering at Masters level in IISc and conducted many international and national seminars in the area. Served as Chairman and Secretary of International Technical Committee of Forensic Geotechnical Engineering of International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering for four terms of four years (two terms as secretary and two terms as Chairman)
5. Have been advocating application of sustainable engineering in geotechnical engineering practice and have undertaken projects at field level, rehabilitation of failed/distressed structures using ground improvement technics, remediation of dumpsites etc. As Director of the programme, introduced a 9 month post graduate certificate course Sustainable Engineering Course in Indian Institute of Science, which has been a very successful course meeting the requirements of many professionals.
